The Color Green in Home Decorating

In general the color green is symbolic of life and nature. In some tones, this can evoke images of forests, grasslands, and other vigorous healthy scenes. However in other tones the life which is evoked can mean sickness, mildew, and mold. It is important to be aware of this duality when choosing a tone of green for your home.

One of the most popular places to use green tones is in the living room. Green adds a sense of energy to a space, invigorating it, and making it seem more exciting. The fact that it so easily evokes the outdoors is one way for people to turn a stogy space into a wide open environment.

In other spaces, you can use green to evoke a sense of serenity. In a bedroom, the correct use of sage, or forest green, can bathe a room in tranquility, giving it that subtle sense of natural peace that can be found in an open meadow, or deep in the quiet of the woods.

Many people create children's rooms around a green color theme, as a way of decorating without implying gender divisions. A blue room symbolizes boys, and a pink room is feminine, so a green room is a good compromise for those that don't like to stereotype.

When paired with other colors green tones can take on a whole other dimension. Use soft greens in an earth toned environment, to create a warm and inviting space. Match it up with black or white contrasting colors, and you get a vigorous space that implies outdoor activities. When paired with red you get a festive ambiance, indicative of the holiday season and Christmas decorating.

The color green is both vigorous and relaxed, implying life and action, while at the same time creating a relaxed and tranquil environment. This versatility makes green a pretty good color to use in just about any environment.
